Are you a candidate?

Do you know what your BMI or body mass index is? Click here to find out.

Bariatric or weight loss surgery is an option only when other weight loss options have failed. Bariatric surgery is a tool to help you lose weight, but it is by no means a weight loss solution by itself. As a prospective patient, you must be willing to learn healthy eating behaviors as well as become more physically active to succeed in keeping weight off in the long term.

You must also meet criteria that make surgery the best option.

You might be a good candidate for surgery if:

  • You have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more.
    Or
  • A BMI of 35-39.9 with health-related problems that are known to improve with weight loss. This BMI requirement applies only to gastric sleeve and gastrice bypass. If you have a BMI of 30 with health-related problems that are know to improve with weight loss, you may be eligible for gastric banding. And
  • Are able to undergo a major operation as determined by your medical physician and/or surgeon.
  • Have failed to lose weight through other methods.
  • Do not have active drug or alcohol problems.
  • Are a non-smoker.
  • Do not have uncontrolled psychological conditions.
  • Do not have an untreated endocrine cause of obesity (e.g., thyroid disorder).
  • Have been struggling with morbid obesity for more than two years.
  • Have a consensus opinion from our multi-disciplinary team.
  • Understand the risks associated with surgery.

If you meet the above criteria and are considering becoming part of our weight loss surgery family, please plan to attend one of our free Patient Education Seminars. Attendance is the first step toward a healthier you! Click here to view a schedule of upcoming seminars in your area.
